Liu: White paper shows goal, path of HK democratic progress

HONG KONG - The white paper on Hong Kong's democracy reflects the goal and path of the city's democratic development under the principle of "one country, two systems", said Liu Guangyuan, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
He made the remark when explaining the significance of the white paper to over 120 representatives of foreign consuls general and chambers of commerce in Hong Kong, business groups, youth leaders and legal experts, in a Wednesday seminar.
The document was issued by the State Council Information Office on Monday morning, which introduces the democratic development in the Hong Kong SAR, as well as the central government's role in it.
In his speech, Liu said the white paper pointed out the fact that the Communist Party of China and the central government have kept promoting and advancing Hong Kong's democratic system, despite repeated obstructions from anti-China forces.
The document will help counter the interference of anti-China forces both at home and overseas to undermine the city's democratic development, under the pretext of so-called human rights and freedom, Liu said.
It also demonstrates the deep understanding and clear planning of the Communist Party of China and the central government in the city's democratic development, he said.
Liu added that the white paper will enhance confidence in the future development of democracy in Hong Kong.
