The Global South Research Center (GSRC) was officially launched in Beijing on March 28, bringing together scholars and high-level representatives from international organizations, government agencies, think tanks and academic institutions. Participants included senior officials, researchers and experts from Egypt, Ethiopia, Brazil, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, and more.

Zhang Qingwei, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, attended the ceremony and delivered some remarks emphasizing that the center reflects China's commitment to advancing cooperation among Global South countries. He highlighted the importance of unity and development-driven progress in promoting international fairness and supporting sustainable global growth.

The center, led by the Development Research Center of the State Council (DRC) and operating under the Center for International Knowledge on Development (CIKD), will serve as a research and exchange hub. It is governed by a council comprising representatives from leading research institutions, international organizations, and prominent experts from the Global South.

Following the inauguration, the center held its first council meeting, chaired by the chairman of the GSRC Council Lu hao, who is also the Minister of the DRC and the President of CIKD. The meeting discussed key development challenges, research priorities and operational strategies. Participants reiterated the need for policy-driven studies on development financing, trade, technology, green growth, and food and energy security. The center aims to provide actionable recommendations and facilitate dialogue on major issues affecting the Global South.
